In The Reluctant Astronaut, Roy Fleming, played by Don Knotts, is a timid and apprehensive man living in a small town. He works as a kiddie-ride operator and has a crippling fear of heights. Roy's father, Buck Fleming, who is a strict and overbearing man, decides to shake up Roy's life by signing him up for the space program.

Reluctantly, Roy heads to Houston, Texas, believing he has been chosen to become an astronaut. However, upon his arrival, he learns that his actual position is that of a janitor at NASA. Disappointed and feeling out of place, Roy still wants to live up to his father's expectations and tries to maintain the illusion of being an astronaut to his family and friends back home.

As Roy begins his janitorial duties, he finds solace in befriending other NASA employees who sympathize with his predicament. One of his newfound friends is Ellie Jackson, a kind-hearted and supportive technician who encourages Roy to face his fears. Roy gradually gains confidence and starts to believe in his own potential.

Meanwhile, NASA decides to launch an automated spacecraft, but to prove its worthiness, they come up with a plan to send a civilian into space. Roy is unexpectedly chosen to be the layperson on this groundbreaking mission. This revelation both excites and terrifies him as he must now confront his greatest fear - heights - in the vastness of outer space.

Roy undergoes rigorous training alongside experienced astronauts, and Ellie becomes his biggest source of support and encouragement throughout the process. As the launch date approaches, Roy starts to doubt his abilities and fears that his secret will be exposed. However, with Ellie's help and the belief of his newfound friends, Roy discovers his strength and determination to conquer his fears.

On the day of the mission, Roy successfully boards the spacecraft but faces several challenges and unexpected situations. Through his wit, resourcefulness, and bravery, he manages to overcome each obstacle, proving not only to himself but also to his family and friends that he is capable of facing and conquering his fears.

In the end, Roy returns to Earth as a national hero, gaining the respect and admiration he had always yearned for. He reconciles with his father, realizing that he does not need to live up to anyone's expectations but his own. Roy's journey from a reluctant astronaut to a fearless hero showcases the power of self-belief and the triumph of facing one's fears.
