Kubo is a young, one-eyed boy living with his mother in a small coastal village. Every day, he goes to the village square and entertains the locals with his origami storytelling skills, where he brings paper to life through his magical powers. His stories revolve around the mythical samurai Hanzo, who fought a great battle alongside Kubo's mother, but tragically perished.

One evening, Kubo stays out after sunset against his mother's warnings. This time, he accidentally summons a vengeful spirit from the past, known as the Moon King. The Moon King sends his two creepy daughters, the Sisters, to track Kubo down and take his remaining eye, as it holds great power. In order to protect himself and his mother, Kubo embarks on a quest to find his father's lost armor, which will grant him the strength to defeat the Moon King.

Joined by a lively origami samurai named Beetle and a delicate, musical monkey brought to life by Kubo's mother's magic, Kubo's journey takes him through mythical landscapes and treacherous obstacles. Along the way, they encounter mystical creatures and encounter the truth about Kubo's family.

As Kubo uncovers his past, he comes to understand the significance of his own magical abilities. He learns that his ability to create and bring origami to life is connected to his parents' powers. Through his determination and bravery, he ultimately collects the armor pieces and prepares for a climactic battle against the Moon King.

In a final showdown, Kubo uses his magical powers and the strength of his family's memory to confront the Moon King. He discovers that the Moon King was once his grandfather, who stole his father's humanity in an attempt to rule over him. Kubo appeals to his grandfather's dormant love for him, showing him the beauty and importance of human connections.

With the power of love and the support of his newly discovered family, Kubo defeats the Moon King and restores balance to the world. He returns to his village, now celebrated as a hero. Through his journey, Kubo not only discovers his own strength and magical abilities, but also learns the importance of love, forgiveness, and the power of storytelling to heal and unite.
