In Listen Up Philip, Philip Lewis Friedman is an incredibly self-absorbed and egotistical writer who is anxiously awaiting the publication of his second novel. However, he has become increasingly disillusioned with the bustling and noisy nature of his adopted home city, feeling overwhelmed by the constant crowds and distractions.

Compounding his troubles, Philip's relationship with his girlfriend Ashley, a talented photographer, is deteriorating. His indifference towards promoting his upcoming novel only exacerbates the strain on their already fragile connection. Feeling pushed out and burdened by his surroundings and relationships, Philip finds solace in his idol, renowned author Ike Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, recognizing Philip's talents and understanding his need for solitude, offers him the opportunity to stay at his isolated summer home. Craving peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject – himself – Philip eagerly accepts the invitation. As he immerses himself in the seclusion of Zimmerman's retreat, he hopes to find both personal and creative growth.

During his time at the summer home, Philip's experiences and interactions contribute to his self-reflection and growth as an individual. He encounters a variety of characters, including a younger writer named Yvette, who provides him with a new perspective on life and art. Philip learns that self-absorption can be isolating and detrimental, leading him to confront his own flaws and recognize the importance of meaningful relationships.

While Philip grapples with his ego and self-obsession, Ashley struggles with her own journey of self-discovery and finding her place in the world. The film intertwines their parallel stories, exploring themes of self-absorption, relationships, and personal growth.

In Listen Up Philip, Philip's quest for peace and inspiration in a secluded sanctuary ultimately leads him on a transformative journey, challenging him to question his priorities and reevaluate his approach to life and relationships.
