American Heart is a dramatic film released in 1992 that focuses on the struggles and redemption of a father and son relationship. After spending years in prison, Jack Kelson (played by Jeff Bridges) is released and tries to rebuild his life in Seattle. Meanwhile, his estranged teenage son, Nick (played by Edward Furlong), who had been living with his aunt, discovers his father is back in town and seeks him out.

Nick initially harbors resentment towards his father for leaving him and his mother, who passed away when Nick was young. However, he is curious to understand what led his father to a life of crime and wants to reconnect with him. Over time, Nick convinces Jack to let him stay at his tiny apartment, hoping to build a relationship and create a better life together.

As father and son start living under the same roof, they struggle with their past mistakes and the challenges of forging a new path. Jack, haunted by his criminal history and desperate to provide for Nick, becomes involved in a black-market scheme, selling stolen Native American artifacts. Meanwhile, Nick, despite his teenage impulsivity, longs for stability, education, and a sense of belonging.

While trying to navigate their respective issues, Jack and Nick encounter a diverse group of characters who impact their lives. These include a kind-hearted but terminally ill prostitute named Molly (played by Lucinda Jenney), a streetwise kid named Dewayne (played by John Boylan), and an aging homeless man named Albert (played by Don Harvey). These individuals challenge and influence Jack and Nick's choices, serving as catalysts for personal growth and transformation.

As their bond grows, Jack begins to understand the importance of being a responsible father and tries to make amends for his past actions. He contemplates leaving the criminal life behind and turning himself into the authorities. However, a series of events, including a violent confrontation with a dangerous criminal known as Hacker (played by Greg Sevigny), threaten to dismantle their progress. Ultimately, Jack must decide whether to protect his son or prioritize his own redemption.

American Heart explores the themes of second chances, forgiveness, and the desire for connection. It delves into the complexities of fatherhood and showcases the transformation of a broken family striving to build a better future amidst their troubled pasts.
