Lora Meredith, a young and determined white widow in the 1950s, is determined to make it big on Broadway. She aspires to become an actress and is constantly on the lookout for opportunities to audition and secure roles. Along the way, she meets Annie Johnson, a struggling black single mother who is working multiple jobs to make ends meet.
Recognizing Annie's kind and caring nature, Lora offers her a job as a housekeeper and, soon after, as a caretaker for her young daughter, Susie.
