"Lone Survivor" is a 2013 action war film based on the true story of a failed United States Navy SEALs mission called Operation Red Wings that took place in 2005 in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan. The film focuses on the experiences of four Navy SEALs from SEAL Team 10 who were sent on the mission to capture or kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.

The four SEALs involved were Marcus Luttrell (played by Mark Wahlberg), Michael P. Murphy (played by Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (played by Emile Hirsch), and Matthew Axelson (played by Ben Foster). Their mission involves hiking through the rugged mountains of Afghanistan to locate and surveil Ahmad Shah and his associates.

During their mission, the SEALs encounter a group of unarmed Afghan civilians, including an elderly man and a young boy. They face a moral dilemma, unsure of whether these civilians are in league with the Taliban or innocent bystanders. Despite their reservations, the SEALs follow their rules of engagement, which state they cannot harm unarmed civilians. The decision they make in allowing these civilians to leave alerts the nearby Taliban fighters, who launch an ambush on the SEAL team.

Overwhelmed by the enemies in the mountains, the SEALs find themselves vastly outnumbered and outgunned. Communication devices get damaged, making it impossible to call for extraction or reinforcements. The team engages in intense firefights with the Taliban, showing incredible resilience and fighting spirit.

Their situation becomes even more dire when Murphy risks his life to climb an exposed rock face to call for help through a satellite phone. Unfortunately, his call is unsuccessful, and he gets shot and killed while providing cover for his teammates.

With their position compromised, Dietz is mortally wounded, and Axelson sacrifices himself to provide covering fire, allowing Luttrell to evade capture. Luttrell ultimately finds refuge with friendly Afghan villagers who protect him from the pursuing Taliban.

Luttrell becomes the lone survivor of the mission and is eventually rescued by a United States Army Ranger patrol. The film ends with real-life photos and videos of the SEAL team members and the villagers who saved Luttrell, reminding the audience of the sacrifices made during Operation Red Wings.
