As Major Cage continues to relive the same day, he slowly becomes a skilled and experienced soldier due to the repetitive training and battles. He seeks out the help of a renowned soldier, Rita Vrataski, known as the "Angel of Verdun," who initially had the same time-loop experience but lost it after receiving a blood transfusion.
Using her knowledge and combat skills, Rita trains Cage to improve his abilities, hoping to find a way to defeat the alien invaders known as Mimics and break the time loop. They discover that the Mimic Omega, the central hive mind controlling the invasion, has the ability to reset time whenever an Alpha is killed, essentially resetting the day.
Cage and Rita embark on a mission to locate the Omega in hopes of killing it, thereby breaking the time loop once and for all. Throughout their repeated encounters with the Mimics, Cage gains insight into their strategies and weaknesses while developing a close bond with Rita.
As they make progress in their mission, Cage learns that his repetitive experiences may hold the key to winning the war against the Mimics. He eventually realizes that he has absorbed the Mimic ability to reset time by killing an Alpha, making him the new "Omega."
