As the story unfolds in the movie Maria's Lovers, Ivan Bibic's return to his Pittsburgh suburb after surviving a Japanese POW camp is met with mixed emotions. While he is relieved to be back home, he is haunted by vivid nightmares and struggles to readjust to civilian life.

Throughout his time in the POW camp, Ivan remained faithfully devoted to Maria Bosic, his childhood love and fellow Yugoslavian immigrant. Despite the hardships they faced and the separation between them, their love persisted. Maria, on the other hand, had moved on and started dating Captain Al Griselli, whom she had a virtual engagement with.

However, when Ivan returns, Maria's feelings for him resurface, causing her to break off her engagement with Captain Griselli. Despite warnings from Ivan's father about the challenges of marriage and his own feelings of unworthiness, Ivan and Maria decide to get married, hoping that their love can bridge the gap caused by Ivan's traumatic experiences.

But as time passes, Ivan's psychological impotence begins to plague their relationship. He feels inadequate and unworthy of Maria, leading him to question whether he should be looking for someone else. In the midst of this turmoil, a slick and charming guitar-and-song-busker named Clarence Butts arrives in South-Western PA.

Sensing Ivan's emotional vulnerability, Clarence sets out to seduce Maria, taking advantage of the cracks in their relationship. Maria finds herself torn between her love for Ivan and the allure of a fresh, passionate connection with Clarence. The love triangle intensifies, creating a web of complex emotions and difficult decisions for everyone involved.

Maria's Lovers explores the themes of love, fidelity, and resilience in the face of trauma. It delves into the internal struggle of its characters as they navigate the aftermath of war, the weight of societal expectations, and the search for true happiness.
