"The Painted Bird" is based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Jerzy Kosiński. The story takes place during World War II in Eastern Europe, focusing on a young unnamed Jewish boy.

As the war escalates, the boy's parents entrust him to the care of an elderly woman in a remote village. However, due to rising anti-Semitic sentiment, the woman soon dies. The boy is left alone and begins a dangerous journey to find safety.

Throughout his journey, the boy encounters a surreal and brutal world. He encounters various characters, some of whom offer him assistance, while others exploit or harm him. His experiences reflect the extreme cruelty and violence of war-torn Eastern Europe.

At one point, the boy is taken in by a bird trapper and his disturbed wife. However, he soon witnesses the couple engaging in sadistic and violent behavior towards him and others in their household. He eventually escapes, but is captured by a group of sadistic Nazis who torture him and paint him like a bird.

The boy is later rescued by a Soviet soldier, who brings him to a remote orphanage. Here, he struggles to adapt to the harsh environment and cruel treatment of the other children and caregivers.

Throughout the film, the boy witnesses the horrors of war, including acts of rape, murder, and extreme violence. His journey becomes a metaphor for the dehumanizing effects of war, as he is stripped of his identity and subjected to unspeakable cruelty.

Ultimately, the boy manages to escape and find refuge in the forest. It is here that he finds solace in nature and encounters a group of partisans fighting against the Nazis. Despite the brutality he has witnessed, the film ends on a note of hope as the boy finds companionship and a sense of belonging among the partisans.

"The Painted Bird" is a haunting and deeply disturbing exploration of the human capacity for cruelty, survival, and resilience in the face of unimaginable horrors during World War II.
