Hugo Cabret is a young boy who becomes an orphan after his father dies in a fire. He is taken in by his alcoholic uncle, Claude, who works as the clockkeeper at a bustling train station in Paris. Hugo's uncle disappears, leaving him to take over the maintenance of the station's clocks, which he does diligently to avoid suspicion from the station inspector.
To cope with his loneliness and grief, Hugo becomes fascinated with fixing mechanical objects, particularly an automaton, a mechanical man designed to write with a pen. Hugo's father had discovered the automaton in a museum where he worked and had been trying to repair it before his death.
