Hugo Cabret is a young boy who becomes an orphan after his father dies in a fire. He is taken in by his alcoholic uncle, Claude, who works as the clockkeeper at a bustling train station in Paris. Hugo's uncle disappears, leaving him to take over the maintenance of the station's clocks, which he does diligently to avoid suspicion from the station inspector.

To cope with his loneliness and grief, Hugo becomes fascinated with fixing mechanical objects, particularly an automaton, a mechanical man designed to write with a pen. Hugo's father had discovered the automaton in a museum where he worked and had been trying to repair it before his death. Left with only a broken automaton and a notebook with cryptic drawings, Hugo believes that by repairing the automaton, it will somehow reveal a message from his father.

Hugo befriends Isabelle, the goddaughter of a grumpy toy merchant named Georges Méliès. Isabelle is intrigued by Hugo's secret life in the train station and becomes his ally in solving the mystery of the automaton and his father's connection to it. Together, they discover that Méliès was once a famous filmmaker who fell into obscurity due to the destructive impact of World War I.

Through their adventures, Hugo and Isabelle uncover the truth behind Méliès' past and find a renewed sense of purpose for both themselves and Méliès. With the help of Méliès' wife, they restore his lost films and plan a surprise tribute to him.

In the end, Hugo finally repairs the automaton, which reveals a drawing of a moon and a keyhole-shaped heart. This leads him to a hidden drawing of a film shot Méliès made, revealing his true identity and the importance of his work. Méliès, grateful for their kindness, allows Hugo to live with him, providing him a loving home and a sense of belonging.

The film ends with a celebration of Méliès' restored films, where Hugo and Isabelle dance together in happiness, surrounded by friends and family who have found their place in the world.
