Leviathan is a Russian drama film directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, released in 2014. The main protagonist, Kolya, lives in a small coastal town with his wife, Lilya, and his teenage son, Roma. Kolya's property is situated on a scenic spot on the coast and has been his family's home for generations.

The conflict begins when the corrupt mayor of the town, Vadim, decides to seize Kolya's property under the pretense of public interest and build a communication tower on the land. Kolya is determined to fight back and protect his home, as he is well aware of the mayor's unjust intentions.

To assist in his battle against Vadim, Kolya invites his old friend, Dmitri, who is now a successful Moscow lawyer, to help with his case. Dmitri arrives in the town with evidence of Vadim's corruption and prepares to challenge the mayor's actions in court.

However, Vadim is a powerful man who controls the local police and judiciary. Despite the lawyer's efforts, the court proceedings seem to be biased and manipulated in favor of the mayor. As the legal battle intensifies, Kolya's relationship with his wife becomes strained, and a parallel plot reveals her involvement in an extramarital affair.

Throughout the film, elements of deep corruption and moral decay within Russian society are exposed. The story reflects on themes of political power, legal injustice, and the destitution of individuals who dare to challenge the system.

As the narrative progresses, Kolya's fight against Vadim starts to take a toll on his mental and emotional well-being. He becomes increasingly desperate, resorting to extreme measures that lead to dangerous consequences for both himself and his family.

Leviathan provides a critical examination of the Russian political and judicial system. It showcases the powerlessness of ordinary citizens against the corrupt elite and the devastating impact such battles can have on personal relationships and the human spirit.
