"Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" is a 1970 Italian film directed by Elio Petri. The movie revolves around the main protagonist, Dottore (Doctor) Amanzio Bonfantini, who holds the prestigious position of Chief of the Homicide Section in the Italian police force.

Bonfantini is a deeply power-hungry and manipulative character who becomes obsessed with the idea that he can commit a perfect crime and get away with it due to his position of authority. With this delusion in mind, he decides to murder his mistress Augusta Terzi.

He meticulously plans the murder, making sure to leave behind multiple pieces of evidence deliberately pointing to his own culpability. This includes his fingerprints, footprints, and even a written confession, all carefully placed at the crime scene. Bonfantini believes that such an audacious act will prove his complete dominance and impunity over the justice system.

As the investigation into Augusta's murder commences, Bonfantini plays an active role in leading the investigation himself. The detectives under his command follow the clues he has left them, readily accepting his guidance and assuming his innocence. His fellow officers and superiors fail to suspect their esteemed Chief of any wrongdoing.

As the investigation progresses, however, the clues begin to lead the police to Bonfantini himself. Fueled by his megalomania, he presents alibis that are easily refuted, leading to growing suspicions among his colleagues. When evidence starts pointing directly at him, he tries to manipulate the investigation further, framing an immigrant worker as the killer.

Throughout the film, the plot delves into the complex relationship between power, corruption, and authoritarianism. Bonfantini's actions challenge the very notion of justice and expose the flaws within the system. The movie offers a scathing critique of the abuse and immunity granted to those in positions of power.

As the tension rises and Bonfantini's web of deceit becomes increasingly exposed, the movie culminates in a thrilling climax that questions whether the truth will finally prevail or if the Chief of the Homicide Section will indeed remain above suspicion.
