Accattone is a 1961 Italian drama film directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Set in the slums of Rome, the film tells the story of Vittorio "Accattone" Cataldi, a pimp whose life takes a dramatic turn when his only source of income, his prostitute Stella, is sent to prison.

Accattone is a charismatic yet lazy and shiftless hustler who relies heavily on Stella's income to support his lavish lifestyle. With Stella behind bars, he is left penniless and desperate. Accattone tries to find alternative ways to sustain himself, but his lack of skills and motivation make it difficult for him to find other means of survival.

In his attempt to make ends meet, Accattone becomes involved with a young woman named Maddalena, who has fallen for his charm. Maddalena, an innocent and naive girl not yet ensnared in the harsh realities of the streets, becomes infatuated with Accattone and offers him shelter. However, Accattone's turbulent lifestyle and inability to change his ways threaten their blossoming relationship.

As Accattone tries to navigate a path out of poverty and despair, he encounters various characters from the underbelly of society – including prostitutes, thieves, and drug addicts – who reflect the harsh realities of life in the Roman slums. Amidst this backdrop, the film raises questions about the moral decay of society and the struggle for redemption and survival.

Throughout the film, Accattone struggles to break free from his self-destructive behavior and find a way to support himself without exploiting others. In his pursuit of a different life, he confronts his own shortcomings and faces the consequences of his actions, leading to a powerful climax that challenges his very existence.

Accattone is a raw and gritty portrayal of poverty, desperation, and the human spirit's capacity for change. Pasolini's direction, coupled with a compelling performance by Franco Citti as Accattone, creates a haunting and thought-provoking cinematic experience that shines a light on society's forgotten and marginalized members.
