Asuna, the protagonist of the film Children Who Chase Lost Voices, lives in a small, rural town and finds solace in her crystal radio, which lets her tune into a unique and enchanting melody. Her father, a passionate traveler and adventurer, passed away, leaving her with the radio as a token of their bond. One day, while Asuna is on her way home, she is attacked by a terrifying creature known as a Quetzalcoatl and is miraculously saved by a young boy named Shun.

Fascinated by Shun's mysterious demeanor and his connection to the world of Agartha, a legendary realm mentioned in folktales, Asuna develops a deep curiosity about him. However, Shun mysteriously vanishes soon after their meeting. Determined to reunite with him, Asuna embarks on a thrilling adventure alongside Mr. Morisaki, her substitute teacher, who had been a close friend of Shun.

Together, Asuna and Mr. Morisaki venture into the hidden world of Agartha, a land described as a gateway between life and death, where the secrets of the universe are said to reside. Along the way, they encounter a variety of mythical creatures and encounter different societies that inhabit this mystical domain. Asuna and Mr. Morisaki gradually come to understand the delicate balance of life and death, as well as the complex emotions that evolve from these experiences.

Within Agartha, they discover a civilization that has sought eternal life, using forbidden rituals to extend their existence. However, this quest for immortality has consequences and comes at a great cost. Asuna and Mr. Morisaki find themselves entangled in the conflicts and struggles of this realm.

Throughout their journey, Asuna learns about the transience of life and the importance of treasuring every moment. She witnesses both the beauty and cruelty of the world, finding herself confronted by loss and heartache. As she grows emotionally and begins to understand the significance of her father's radio, Asuna strengthens her resolve to reunite with Shun and bring hope and closure to both him and herself.
