"Fateless," based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Imre Kertész, follows the harrowing journey of György Köves, a young Hungarian Jewish boy, during World War II.

The film begins with György living comfortably in Budapest with his father and stepmother. However, their lives are abruptly disrupted when György's father is taken away to a forced labor camp. Left alone, György is sent to a brickyard as a laborer, where he works alongside other Jewish prisoners.

As the war escalates, György's bus is stopped by German soldiers, and he, along with the other Jewish occupants, is transported to Buchenwald concentration camp. At the camp, György witnesses extreme suffering, cruelty, and death. He becomes acquainted with other prisoners who provide him with advice on how to survive and maintain his dignity and self-esteem amidst the horrors.

Throughout his time in the camp, György experiences various forms of persecution and witnesses the pervasive anti-Semitism. He struggles to understand the nature of his identity as a Jew and grapples with his place in the world.

Despite the overwhelming hardships, György manages to survive until the end of the war. When he finally returns to Budapest, he is met with a changed city. The vibrant colors of pre-war Budapest have faded, and the city itself has transformed. György tries to reacclimate to his old life, but he is haunted by the traumatic memories of the camps.

The film employs visual techniques to portray the shifting moods and emotions of the protagonist. The use of sepia, black and white, and color alternates throughout the movie, mirroring György's internal state and capturing the contrasting experiences he endures.

"Fateless" explores the themes of survival, identity, resilience, and the enduring impact of the Holocaust on those who lived through it. It raises profound questions about the nature of humanity and the fragility of human dignity in the face of unimaginable adversity.
