In the town of Rocksford, New England, in the year 1672, Jonathan Wooley, a devout Puritan witch hunter, discovers that he has been cursed after sentencing a witch named Jennifer to be burned at the stake. The curse states that all of his descendants will never find true happiness in their marriages.

Centuries later, in present-day, Wallace Wooley, one of Jonathan Wooley's modern-day descendants, is running for state governor. Wallace is engaged to Estelle Masterson, the daughter of his wealthy sponsor.

Little does Wallace know, Jennifer, the witch who was burned at the stake, has been trapped as a spirit all these years. However, she now finds an opportunity to seek revenge on Jonathan's descendants by disrupting Wallace's impending marriage.

Jennifer realizes that by inhabiting a body, she can intervene in Wallace and Estelle's relationship. With the help of her warlock father Daniel, who has also been trapped as a spirit, they find a way to re-enter the mortal world.

As Jennifer materializes, she uses her supernatural powers to make Wallace fall in love with her instead of Estelle. Jennifer's plan is to make Wallace experience heartbreak and misery, just as she believes Jonathan's descendants deserve.

However, as Jennifer spends more time with Wallace, she begins to feel conflicted. Despite her initial intentions, she starts genuinely falling in love with him. Wallace, oblivious to Jennifer's true identity, is torn between his feelings for her and his loyalty to his fiancée, Estelle.

As the romantic triangle grows more complicated, the spirits of Jonathan and his deceased wife visit Jennifer and Daniel, attempting to persuade them to reconsider their actions. They reveal the true story behind Jonathan's curse and the love shared between Jennifer and him before her execution.

Jennifer's resolve starts to weaken, but it is not until an unexpected twist occurs that she realizes the true nature of the curse and her own feelings. The curse does not mean that Wallace cannot find happiness in marriage, but rather compels him to find happiness with the one he truly loves.

In the end, Jennifer decides to break the curse by sacrificing her own happiness. She uses her powers to restore the relationship between Wallace and Estelle, allowing them to marry even though it means Jennifer will be forever alone.

The movie concludes with Wallace becoming governor, while Jennifer fades away as a spirit, forever tormented but having redeemed herself through an act of selflessness. Her love and sacrifice ultimately break the curse on the Wooley family, allowing future generations to find happiness in their marriages.
