Drama   United States of America

After enduring a series of heart-wrenching events, Cheryl Strayed (played by Reese Witherspoon) decides to embark on a transformative journey by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Following the breakdown of her marriage and the sudden death of her mother, Cheryl finds herself feeling lost, burdened by grief, and engaging in destructive behaviors such as drug use and promiscuity.

With the hope of healing her emotional wounds, Cheryl sets off on her solo adventure along the rigorous PCT, spanning from the Mojave Desert in southern California to the Bridge of the Gods at the Oregon-Washington border. Armed with an overstuffed backpack she dubs “Monster," Cheryl embarks on the grueling, physically demanding expedition with the intention of finding herself and reclaiming her sense of purpose.

Throughout her journey, Cheryl encounters various challenges, both internally and externally. She faces treacherous weather conditions, dangerous encounters with wild animals, and the physical strain of walking hundreds of miles. As she strives to adapt to the harsh conditions, Cheryl learns essential survival skills, how to navigate the trail, and the importance of relying on fellow hikers for support.

Along the way, Cheryl meets numerous people who shape her understanding of herself and help her heal. She develops friendships with other hikers who become her trail family, including an experienced hiker named Greg (played by Kevin Rankin) and a friendly couple, the Moores (played by W. Earl Brown and Mo McRae).

Flashbacks and memories from Cheryl's past are interspersed throughout the film, depicting her tumultuous relationship with her mother, Bobbi (played by Laura Dern), and her own struggles with addiction and infidelity. These glimpses into Cheryl's past reveal the root causes of her pain and provide insight into her journey towards redemption.

As Cheryl continues hiking, she gradually sheds her emotional baggage and emerges stronger, both physically and emotionally. The solitude and challenges of the trail allow her to confront her inner demons, process her grief, and eventually forgive herself for past mistakes. Cheryl learns to find solace and strength in the beauty of nature and the stillness of her own company.

In the final stretch of her journey, Cheryl faces her most significant physical challenge yet, enduring an intense snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Despite the overwhelming odds, she perseveres and pushes herself to the brink of her physical limits, refusing to give up.

Finally, after hiking for over 1,000 miles, Cheryl reaches the Bridge of the Gods. Standing on the border between Washington and Oregon, she reflects on her arduous journey and the incredible personal growth she has experienced along the way. With a renewed spirit and a sense of purpose, Cheryl emerges from the trail transformed, ready to embrace her new life with a sense of hope and inner peace.
