In the film Suffragette, set in early 20th century London, the story revolves around Maud Watts, played by Carey Mulligan, who is a working-class wife and mother. Maud's life takes a turn when she is inadvertently sucked into the growing suffragette movement.

Maud works long hours in a laundry factory under grim and exploitative conditions. One day, while making a delivery, she witnesses a suffragette protest led by Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), the leader of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). This encounter sparks Maud's curiosity about the movement and its goals of achieving voting rights for women.

Driven by her newfound curiosity and inspired by her friend Violet (Anne-Marie Duff) and fellow suffragette Edith (Helena Bonham Carter), Maud decides to join the cause. She attends secret meetings, participates in protests, and eventually embraces civil disobedience when peaceful methods fail to bring about change.

As the suffragettes' activities become more aggressive, the State starts responding with harsh tactics. The women face arrests, violence, and imprisonment, enduring brutal force-feeding while in custody. Despite the risks, Maud becomes increasingly devoted to the cause and is willing to sacrifice her family, freedom, and even her life to fight for women's suffrage.

Maud's involvement in the movement brings significant consequences to her personal life. Her husband, Sonny (Ben Whishaw), opposes her activism, considering it inappropriate and threatening to their family's stability. Maud's dedication to the suffragette movement strains their relationship, leading to Sonny disowning her and taking away their son, George.

In a desperate attempt to bring attention to their cause, Maud and the suffragettes plan a grand gesture during a visit by King George V. Their plan is to disrupt the event with a bomb, which Maud reluctantly carries. However, knowing the potential consequences, Maud chooses to abandon the plan at the last moment, unwilling to resort to violence.

In a twist of fate, Maud is eventually caught in a skirmish while attempting to deliver a message to the Prime Minister. She is arrested and sentenced to prison. During her imprisonment, Maud witnesses the cruelty and suffering endured by suffragettes, including her friend Emily Wilding Davison, who ultimately sacrifices her own life for the cause.

The film concludes as Maud is released from prison along with other suffragettes due to mounting public pressure. They are welcomed by a massive crowd outside, cheering for their bravery and demanding change. Maud reunites with her son and, despite the challenging journey, emerges as a symbol of hope and inspiration for generations of women fighting for their rights.

Suffragette showcases the relentless struggle of foot soldiers in the early feminist movement, highlighting the sacrifices made by these women who risked everything to pave the way for future generations in the fight for equality.
