In the movie "Reign Over Me," the protagonist, Charlie Fineman, played by Adam Sandler, lost his family in the tragic September 11 attacks on New York City. As a result, Charlie, a once-successful dentist, becomes introverted and emotionally closed off, isolating himself from the world and retreating into his own world of grief.
Years later, Charlie unexpectedly encounters his old college roommate, Alan Johnson, portrayed by Don Cheadle, on the streets of New York City. Alan, a dentist himself, recognizes Charlie but realizes he is unrecognizable due to the devastating loss he endured. Determined to help his old friend, Alan tries to reconnect with Charlie, who initially resists any form of human connection.
As Alan persists, he manages to break through Charlie's emotional barricades, allowing the two to rekindle their friendship. Alan tries to be there for Charlie, both as a listening ear and a source of support. Throughout the film, Alan learns about Charlie's immense pain and grief while trying to help him find a way to move forward with his life.
As their friendship strengthens, Alan also faces personal challenges, including issues within his own marriage and midlife crisis. While navigating his own struggles, Alan remains committed to helping Charlie find stability and reclaim his life. Together, the two embark on a journey of healing, understanding, and rediscovering the value of friendship.
Throughout the film, additional characters come into the picture, further aiding Charlie's healing process. A therapist, played by Liv Tyler, offers her expertise, providing guidance and support for both Charlie and Alan. Additionally, a love interest, portrayed by Jada Pinkett Smith, provides a possible chance at emotional connection and romantic companionship for Charlie.
Through a combination of therapy, friendship, and love, Charlie gradually begins to rebuild his life, finding joy and purpose again. While the pain of his loss may never completely dissipate, the support of Alan and others in his life gives Charlie the strength to move forward, accepting his past while also embracing the possibilities of the future.
