The Platform is a Spanish science fiction thriller film directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. The story revolves around a vertical prison known as "The Pit," which consists of numerous levels, with two prisoners per level. Each day, a platform filled with a variety of food starts at the top and descends level by level, allowing the prisoners to eat what they can before reaching the lower levels.

The film's protagonist is Goreng, a man who voluntarily enters The Pit to quit smoking and read Don Quixote in peace. He is initially paired with an elderly man named Trimagasi, who introduces him to the harsh reality of their existence. The prisoners are randomly reassigned to different levels every month, experiencing both abundance and scarcity of food.

As Goreng and his various cellmates descend the levels, they encounter different social dynamics and survival strategies. While some prisoners cooperate to ration and share the food, others resort to violence and cannibalism. The levels become increasingly brutal as desperation heightens.

Goreng becomes determined to bring change to The Pit and its twisted system. With the help of a cellmate named Baharat, who is an activist, he devises a plan to manipulate the platform and ensure that food reaches every level. Their actions, however, attract the attention and opposition of the prison's ruthless administration.

Throughout the film, The Platform explores themes of inequality, social hierarchy, selfishness, and the struggle for survival. It serves as an allegory for class and societal issues, capturing the extremes of human behavior when faced with scarcity and desperate circumstances.

As the story unravels, Goreng becomes increasingly determined to expose the flaws of The Pit and bring justice to its prisoners. The film's climax reveals the true nature of the prison's management system and leaves the audience with a thought-provoking ending that prompts reflection on the nature of humanity, empathy, and the systems that govern our societies.
