In the movie "The Humbling," based on Philip Roth's novel of the same name, Simon Axler, a renowned stage actor played by Al Pacino, experiences a severe mental breakdown during a live performance. Devastated and feeling that his career is over, he becomes suicidal and is admitted to a psychiatric institution.

After being discharged, Simon decides to make a fresh start and retreats to his country house. There, he encounters Pegeen Mike Stapleford (Greta Gerwig), the daughter of his friends, who has been in love with him since she was a child. Pegeen is a lesbian, but she unexpectedly falls for Simon and they start a passionate affair.

Simon, now in his late sixties, finds himself exhilarated and rejuvenated by the intense relationship with Pegeen, who is in her early thirties. However, soon he realizes that keeping up with her youthful energy and spontaneity is increasingly challenging for him.
