"The Last Duel" is a historical drama film based on true events and directed by Ridley Scott. Set in 14th century France, the story revolves around the conflict between two knights, Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, leading to a high-stakes duel that tests the concepts of justice, truth, and honor.

Jean de Carrouges returns from war to his estate in Normandy, still haunted by the horrors he witnessed. His loyal squire, Jacques Le Gris, accompanies him and their friendship appears strong. However, a tragic event occurs when Marguerite de Carrouges, Jean's wife, accuses Le Gris of raping her while her husband was away. Marguerite's accusation disrupts the harmony between the two families, and tensions escalate as it becomes a matter of who to believe.

King Charles VI becomes involved in the dispute and, to settle the matter, he invokes an ancient right called "trial by combat." This legal practice implies that the guilt or innocence of the accused would be determined through a duel, with God deciding the truth based on the outcome. Jean, convinced of his wife's honesty and seeking justice, accepts the challenge to combat.

As the duel approaches, the film unfolds in three different parts, each narrating the events leading up to the fateful confrontation from a different perspective. The first part is seen through the eyes of Jean, portraying him as a loving husband and valiant knight, determined to defend his family's honor. The second part is presented from Marguerite's perspective, chronicling the struggles of a woman in a deeply patriarchal society, where her testimony is doubted and her voice is often silenced. The third part reveals the events from Le Gris' viewpoint, shedding light on the complex dynamics between both men and their loyalty to one another.

The film not only focuses on the personal drama between the characters but also highlights larger societal issues, such as misogyny, the power dynamics of the ruling class, and the manipulation of truth. Ultimately, the duel takes place in front of a large audience, putting both men's lives at stake. The outcome of the duel will not only determine their individual fates but also decide the truth of Marguerite's accusation, setting a precedent for justice in the kingdom.

"The Last Duel" explores themes of love, betrayal, honor, and the pursuit of justice through a captivating and riveting historical narrative.
