In the 1999 animated film adaptation of George Orwell's famous novel, Animal Farm, the story begins on Manor Farm, ruled by an irresponsible and cruel farmer named Mr. Jones. Inspired by Old Major, an aging boar who envisions a life of freedom for all animals, the animals unite and rise up against their human oppressors, successfully overthrowing Mr. Jones.

They establish their own democratic society and rename the farm "Animal Farm." The pigs, led by the intelligent and persuasive Snowball and the cunning and power-hungry Napoleon, take charge of the farm. They establish the principles of Animalism, which promotes the concept of equality and a society where animals are free from human exploitation.

Initially, Animal Farm thrives. The animals work together to ensure their prosperity, and they pride themselves on maintaining the principles of Animalism. Snowball promotes ideas for the general well-being of all, such as building a windmill to provide electricity for the farm. However, Napoleon, driven by his desire for power, opposes Snowball and eventually drives him out, taking complete control over Animal Farm.

Under Napoleon's leadership, the principles of Animalism slowly start deteriorating. He starts making decisions based on personal gain rather than the general welfare of all animals. The farm begins experiencing issues such as scarcity of food, reduction in the animals' working hours, and even the accusation of animals conspiring with Snowball to sabotage the farm. To tighten his control, Napoleon employs a group of loyal dogs to act as his enforcers, intimidating and suppressing any opposition.

As time passes, the pigs, especially Napoleon, gradually adopt human-like behaviors and habits. They begin wearing clothes, walking on two legs, and ultimately betraying the foundation of Animalism. The other animals, who initially embraced the revolution in hopes of a better future, are left disillusioned and oppressed. They realize that the pigs have become the very humans they once despised.

The film ends on a tragic note as the animals can no longer differentiate between the pigs and the humans who originally ruled them, highlighting the corruption that inevitably accompanies power. The revolution, which began with noble intentions, ultimately results in the animals losing their freedom and becoming slaves to their once fellow oppressed comrades.
