In the movie Drums Along the Mohawk, Gilbert and Lana Martin are a newly married couple venturing into the American frontier during the colonial period. They settle in the Mohawk Valley in Upstate New York, hoping to make a peaceful life for themselves.

However, their settlement is faced with numerous challenges and threats. The Native American tribes in the area, particularly the Mohawk tribe, repeatedly attack the settlers, destroying their homes and crops. Gilbert and Lana struggle to defend their land and protect their fellow settlers from these Indian attacks.

Amidst the turmoil, Gilbert and Lana find solace and support from Mrs. McKlennar, a kind and strong-willed spinster who provides them with guidance and shelter. It is during their stay with Mrs. McKlennar that Lana becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son.

However, the fighting intensifies as the American Revolution begins. Gilbert feels the patriotic duty to join the Continental Army and fight against the British. Despite Lana's fears for his safety, he leaves to battle the common enemy, leaving her and their newborn son behind.

While Gilbert is away at war, the Mohawk Indians, led by their chief, interfere once again with the settlers' lives. They attack the settlement, burning homes and crops. In the absence of Gilbert, Lana must gather her courage and rally the remaining settlers to defend themselves against the Indian onslaught.

Gilbert eventually returns from the war, but he is severely wounded. He discovers that his settlement has once again fallen victim to Indian attacks, and Lana and their son are in grave danger. Determined to protect his family, Gilbert leads a counterattack against the Indians, fighting alongside his fellow settlers.

The film culminates in a thrilling and intense battle between the settlers and the Mohawk Indians. Despite facing immense odds, Gilbert and the settlers manage to defeat the attackers and reclaim their land.

Drums Along the Mohawk not only portrays the hardships faced by the early American settlers but also highlights the resilience, bravery, and determination of the people who fought to create a home in the untamed frontier.
