After arriving in the remote village, Arthur Kipps faces a chilly reception from the locals, who seem eager to keep their distance from him. He becomes acquainted with Samuel Daily, a wealthy landowner who offers Kipps a ride to the client's house, named Eel Marsh House. Despite Samuel's warnings about the house's eerie reputation, Kipps chooses to stay and complete his task.
