In the movie Operation Petticoat, the submarine commander, Lieutenant Commander Matt T. Sherman (played by Cary Grant), finds himself in a challenging situation during World War II. His submarine, the USS Sea Tiger, gets severely damaged in a Japanese air raid on the Philippines, leaving it in a decrepit state. Despite the difficulties, Sherman decides to salvage the submarine and make it seaworthy again.

Sherman's executive officer, Lieutenant Junior Grade Nicholas Holden (played by Tony Curtis), is a resourceful and witty con-man who often clashes with the by-the-book Sherman. Together, they lead a motley crew of Navy sailors as they embark on a mission to bring the Sea Tiger back to the United States for repairs. However, the situation becomes even more complicated when a group of stranded army nurses, commanded by Lieutenant Barbara Duran (played by Dina Merrill), join them aboard the submarine.

As the Sea Tiger sets sail, Sherman has to navigate various challenges, including scarce supplies, outdated equipment, and the perpetual presence of the army nurses in their male-dominated environment. Hilarity ensues as the misfit crew and the army nurses adapt to their extraordinary circumstances while dealing with the unpredictable nature of war.

Throughout their journey, Sherman and Holden engage in comedic banter and constantly find themselves in humorous situations. Their contrasting personalities and approaches often clash, but they gradually develop a mutual respect and camaraderie. Meanwhile, the army nurses admirably adapt to the challenges of living on a submarine, even using their limited resources creatively to contribute to the mission.

Amidst the comical moments, Operation Petticoat also highlights the emotional impact of war. The crew faces real dangers, such as encounters with enemy vessels and the constant threat of sinking. Along the way, they also rescue civilians stranded in the war-torn region, showcasing their compassion and heroism.

As the Sea Tiger makes its way back to the United States, Sherman must devise a plan to avoid detection by Japanese forces and successfully deliver their precious cargo of army nurses safely. Despite the odds, the crew's determination and resourcefulness ultimately lead to a triumphant return, displaying the indomitable spirit and resilience of those involved in the war effort.

Operation Petticoat is a lighthearted and entertaining comedy-drama that combines elements of adventure, camaraderie, and romance. It showcases the ingenuity and courage of its characters, all while highlighting the absurdities and challenges of war.
