In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the story picks up shortly after the events of the first film, with the Guardians - Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Baby Groot - now a tight-knit family unit. They are hired by a powerful alien race called the Sovereign to protect precious batteries from an inter-dimensional monster. In return, the Sovereign leader, Ayesha, promises to release Gamora's adopted sister Nebula, who is captured by them.

During the mission, Rocket steals some of the batteries, angering the Sovereign. As the Guardians escape, they are chased by a fleet of Sovereign ships until they are saved by a mysterious figure. The figure reveals himself as Ego, a Celestial being who claims to be Peter's long-lost father. Ego invites Peter, Gamora, and Drax to his planet while Rocket and Groot stay behind to repair their damaged ship and keep an eye on Nebula.

On Ego's planet, Peter learns about his Celestial heritage and develops a bond with his father, who explains his profound connection to the power in the universe. Meanwhile, Gamora discovers some unsettling secrets about Ego's true intentions and his connection to other beings across the galaxy. Back on the spaceship, Rocket and Groot encounter a ravager named Yondu Udonta, who has been hired by Ayesha to capture the Guardians. Yondu, who is responsible for abducting Peter as a child, is also struggling with his troubled past.

As the Guardians start to uncover the truth about Ego's plans to dominate the galaxy, fractures start to appear within their newfound family. Gamora seeks Nebula's help in unraveling Ego's true nature, while Peter confronts his father and must make a difficult decision that puts the fate of the galaxy at stake. As the Guardians face their biggest challenge yet, they must find a way to put aside their differences and work together to defeat Ego, protect the universe, and preserve their family.

Throughout the film, humor, heart, and incredible action sequences highlight the Guardians' journey of self-discovery, love, and sacrifice. Additionally, characters like Mantis, a socially awkward empath who acts as Ego's assistant, and the Ravagers, Yondu's crew, play significant roles in the plot, adding depth and further complications to the storyline.
