In Arrival, renowned linguist Dr. Louise Banks (played by Amy Adams) is approached by the United States military to assist in deciphering the language of an extraterrestrial species that has recently landed on Earth. The aliens, referred to as Heptapods due to their seven-limbed appearance, have positioned twelve massive spacecraft in different locations around the world.

Alongside physicist Ian Donnelly (played by Jeremy Renner), Louise is taken to one of the landing sites in Montana, where they join a team of experts trying to establish communication with the Heptapods. Louise and Ian's goal is to understand the aliens' complex written language, which consists of intricate circular symbols known as logograms.

As Louise delves deeper into the language and interacts with the Heptapods inside their spacecraft, she begins to experience vivid and increasingly real flashbacks of moments from her own life. These flashbacks start to merge with her present reality, blurring the lines of time and causing her to question her own sanity.

Despite initial communication barriers, Louise gradually deciphers the Heptapods' language and realizes that it has the power to alter perception and even transcend linear time. She learns that the aliens perceive time as a non-linear construct, enabling them to perceive past, present, and future simultaneously.

With this newfound understanding, Louise communicates with the Heptapods, studying their language in-depth to acquire crucial information. She discovers that the Heptapods have come to Earth to share their knowledge and to stimulate humanity's collective consciousness and perception of time, which will eventually help humanity in a time of need.

However, not all nations respond peacefully to the alien presence, and tensions escalate as governments grow increasingly wary of the Heptapods' intentions. As the world plunges toward the brink of global conflict, Louise's ability to understand the aliens' true purpose becomes vital in averting a catastrophe.

Throughout the film, Louise's personal life is also explored, particularly her relationship with her daughter Hannah. The flashbacks that Louise experiences are eventually revealed to be from her future, implying that the ability to perceive time non-linearly is a gift passed down to Louise's daughter as well.

Arrival is a thought-provoking science fiction film that explores the themes of communication, understanding, and the nature of time. It challenges the conventional notions of language and the linear progression of time while emphasizing the importance of connection and open-mindedness for the survival and progress of humanity.
