"Things to Come" is a 1936 British science fiction film directed by William Cameron Menzies, based on the novel "The Shape of Things to Come" by H.G. Wells. The film spans several decades, exploring the consequences of a devastating and protracted second World War.

The story begins in the year 1940, as the war progresses into its sixth year. The British city of Everytown is under constant bombardment, causing widespread destruction and chaos. The protagonist, John Cabal (played by Raymond Massey), is an innovative pilot who is driven to find a way to end the war and bring peace.

In 1966, after decades of war and the subsequent breakdown of society, a deadly global epidemic known as "The Wandering Sickness" ravages the remnants of humanity. Civilization collapses, and pockets of survivors struggle to survive amid the widespread anarchy and plague.

By 1970, a group of intellectuals and scientists, led by Dr. Harding (played by Ralph Richardson), gather in Everytown to form an organization called "Wings Over the World." This rational and highly advanced society aims to rebuild civilization by establishing order, scientific progress, and humanitarian principles. They restore law and order and focus on improving technological advancements to prevent future wars.

The film then leaps forward to the year 2036 when Everytown has transformed into a gleaming, utopian futuristic city. Humanity has attained a level of social order and progress that surpasses anything seen before. Dr. Cabal, now an elder statesman, reflects on the advancements made and contemplates humanity's next great frontier: space exploration.

Attempting to inspire humanity to reach for the stars, Cabal organizes a massive expedition to the Moon. A group of astronauts, led by his grandson, navigate the challenges of space travel, including the physical and psychological strains it imposes. Ultimately, they successfully land on the Moon and witness the birth of a new cosmic era for humanity.

"Things to Come" is not only a story of war and its devastating consequences but also a reflection on humanity's resilience, hope for progress, and the potential for a brighter future. It explores themes of technological advancement, human evolution, and the innate human desire to explore and conquer new frontiers.
