"The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea" is a 1976 British drama film based on the novel of the same name by Yukio Mishima. Set in a coastal town in England, the film follows the lives of a widowed mother named Anne Osborne and her young son, Jonathan.

Anne, a lonely woman, works in a shipping company and is often away from home. One summer, an American sailor named Jim Cameron arrives in town and befriends Anne. They soon fall in love, slowly nurturing a relationship that provides solace to both of them.

Meanwhile, Jonathan is part of a group of young boys led by a charismatic and disturbed teenager named Chief. Chief and his friends form a secret society that idolizes purity and martial discipline. They despise adults and view them as weak and corrupted.

Jonathan, feeling neglected by his mother's newfound love, becomes conflicted. He is torn between his loyalty to Chief and his attachment to his mother. Chief, cunning and ambitious, pressures Jonathan to conform to the strict code of their secret society. He instigates hatred towards Jim, perceiving him as a threat to their ideology of purity.

Driven by the desire to please Chief and belong to the group, Jonathan succumbs to the pressure and decides to take revenge on Jim. The film delves into Jonathan's inner turmoil and conflict as he struggles to reconcile his loyalty to Chief, his love for his mother, and the consequences of his actions.

The narrative explores themes of love, loss, and the dark underbelly of youth rebellion. It also examines the dangerous boundaries between idealistic notions of purity and the realities of human relationships. The story unfolds as tragedy approaches, leading to a climactic and shocking conclusion that deeply impacts all characters involved.
