In the movie Dogfight, Eddie Birdlace, a young Marine Corps volunteer, prepares to embark on a tour of duty in Vietnam with his three close friends. As a farewell tradition, they plan a wild and raucous night in San Francisco, organizing an event they call a "dogfight."

A dogfight is a competition in which each Marine seeks to find the ugliest date possible to bring to a party. The Marine with the ugliest date wins the game. It is during this contest that Eddie meets Rose Fenny, a shy and awkward waitress with a passion for music. Unbeknownst to Rose, Eddie initially befriends her solely for the purpose of winning the dogfight.

However, as Eddie spends more time with Rose, he begins to see beyond her unassuming exterior and discovers her remarkable inner beauty. Their unexpected bond grows stronger, and both Eddie and Rose start to develop genuine feelings for each other.

As the night progresses, Eddie becomes torn between his loyalty to his friends, who encourage him to keep the game going, and his growing affection for Rose. Witnessing the cruelty of the dogfight and its impact on Rose's self-esteem, Eddie eventually realizes the need for compassion and empathy.

In a poignant twist, Eddie decides to stand up against the degrading contest and defend Rose's honor. He confesses his true feelings to her, apologizing for his initial intentions and expressing his genuine admiration. Rose, hurt but understanding, decides to give Eddie a chance, and they spend the remaining hours of the evening connecting on a deeper level.

The next day, Eddie and his friends depart for Vietnam, but the impact of their night with Rose has profoundly changed their perspectives. Eddie carries his memories of Rose, the lessons learned, and the understanding that true beauty lies within individuals, rather than basing it on societal expectations.

Dogfight explores themes of personal growth, friendship, the nature of beauty, and the impact of war. It showcases Eddie's transformation from a callous young man into someone capable of empathy and compassion, ultimately challenging the toxic masculinity and shallow values ingrained in his Marine training.
