In the film Interstellar, the story is set in a dystopian future where Earth is facing an impending global food crisis and environmental collapse. Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey), a former NASA pilot, lives with his daughter Murph (played by Mackenzie Foy) and son Tom on a struggling farm. Strange gravitational anomalies, dubbed "the Blight," have devastated crops and affected the planet's atmosphere.

Cooper receives a mysterious message from what appears to be a hidden NASA facility. Following the signal, he and Murph stumble upon a group of scientists led by Professor Brand (played by Michael Caine). They reveal the existence of a newly discovered wormhole near Saturn, which offers a potential pathway to habitable planets outside our solar system. NASA is planning an interstellar mission to find a new home for humanity.

Cooper is eventually convinced to join the mission, leaving his family behind. Along with a team of scientists, including Amelia Brand (played by Anne Hathaway), Doyle (played by Wes Bentley), Romilly (played by David Gyasi), and a robot named TARS, they enter the wormhole onboard the spacecraft Endurance.

As they traverse the wormhole, the crew faces various challenges and time dilation effects. They explore different planets in search of habitable worlds for the survivors on Earth. On one planet, they encounter extreme gravitational forces and a time dilation effect that causes years to pass on Earth while only hours elapse for them. One hour spent on the planet equals seven years back on Earth.

Throughout their journey, Cooper and the crew grapple with the nature of time, survival, love, and sacrifice. The bonds between the crew members are tested, and they face difficult decisions that impact humanity's future. Cooper's drive stems from his love for his daughter Murph, who remains on Earth and later becomes essential in solving the equation necessary to launch a massive exodus from Earth.

The climax of the film revolves around Cooper's journey through a black hole called Gargantua. Inside the black hole, he experiences a phenomenon where he can communicate with Murph across time and space. With the help of this metaphysical connection, he sends Murph the data required to solve the equation, allowing humanity to harness gravitational forces to launch massive space stations called "arks."

Eventually, humanity resettles on a habitable world near Saturn, while Cooper, through the transcendental power of the black hole, ends up in a tesseract-like construct where he can communicate with Murph at various points in time. Cooper relays vital information to her that helps her complete his life's work. After this, he is ejected from the construct and finds himself in orbit around Saturn.

The film comes to an emotional conclusion as an older Murph, who went on to become a renowned scientist, reunites with her father before his death. Cooper's sacrifice and the profound implications of his journey enable humanity to thrive in a new world.
