First They Killed My Father is a 2017 historical drama film directed by Angelina Jolie based on the memoir of the same name by Loung Ung. The movie tells the story of Loung Ung, who was only five years old when the Khmer Rouge regime, led by Pol Pot, seized control of Cambodia in 1975.

The film begins with a happy and peaceful life for Loung and her family in Phnom Penh. However, their lives drastically change when the Khmer Rouge soldiers invade the city. The soldiers force the entire population to leave their homes and their belongings behind, transforming Cambodia into a communist agrarian society called "Year Zero."

Loung's family is forced to separate, and she is sent to a labor camp along with other children. There, they endure harsh conditions, forced labor, and constant struggle for survival. Loung witnesses the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge, including executions, starvation, and child soldiers.

Throughout the movie, Loung's determination to survive strengthens, as she is fueled by her love for her family and the hope of reuniting with them. She learns to navigate the dangerous environment, becoming adept at hiding her emotions and blending in with the other children in the camp. She also befriends another girl named Geak, who becomes her closest companion.

As time goes by, Loung's siblings and parents face their own challenges and horrors under the Khmer Rouge regime. Loung's sister Keav is taken to work in a rice field, while her mother and father are assigned to different labor camps. Loung's father, a former soldier, gives her advice on how to stay alive and teaches her about resilience and strength.

During the final act of the film, Loung reunites with her older brother Meng, and the two embark on a dangerous journey to find their parents and sister. They face not only physical hardships like hunger and exhaustion, but also the constant threat of violence from soldiers and landmines.

Throughout their journey, Loung and Meng see the devastating consequences of the Khmer Rouge's radical policies, including widespread famine, mass graves, and the aftermath of massacres. Eventually, through luck and perseverance, they manage to locate their family members and escape to a refugee camp on the border of Thailand.

First They Killed My Father portrays the resilience and strength of a young girl who faced unimaginable horrors during the Khmer Rouge era. Despite the traumatic experiences, Loung's story is one of survival, hope, and the eternal bond of family.
