"The Grey Fox" is a Canadian biographical western film released in 1982, which tells the story of the real-life Old West highwayman, Bill Miner. The film is set in the early 1900s and follows Miner's life after his release from prison.

After spending 33 years behind bars, Bill Miner (played by Richard Farnsworth) is finally released into a society that has drastically changed. The aging outlaw finds it difficult to adjust to the modern world and feels out of place. Struggling to find a purpose in his newfound freedom, Bill decides to return to his old ways – robbing stagecoaches and trains.

With a charming and gentlemanly demeanor, Bill embarks on a series of heists with a newfound partner, Shorty Dunn (played by Wayne Robson), a young and ambitious criminal. Their escapades capture the attention of the media and the Pinkerton detective agency, who become determined to apprehend them.

As his reputation grows, Bill gains a sort of cult following among the public, particularly with railroad workers who have been affected by increasing automation. The film portrays Bill's heists as acts of rebellion against the changing times and a way to maintain his sense of identity.

During one of their robberies, Bill meets and befriends the beautiful and independent photographer Kate Flynn (played by Jackie Burroughs). The two develop a tender relationship, and Kate becomes fascinated with Bill's character and the evolving world around them.

However, their criminal lifestyle cannot continue indefinitely. The Pinkerton detectives, led by the relentless Frank Calder (played by Timothy Webber), gradually close in on Bill and Shorty. The film explores the cat-and-mouse game between the outlaws and the authorities, ultimately leading to their dramatic capture.

"The Grey Fox" combines elements of a classic western with a character-driven drama. The film explores themes of identity, nostalgia, and the clash between tradition and progress. Through Bill Miner's character, it portrays a man who finds purpose in the only way he knows, even when society has left him behind.
