In the movie Asterix the Gaul, the story revolves around the small village of Gaul, which remains the only place in all of Gaul that has not been fully conquered by the Romans. The villagers, including the protagonist Asterix and his best friend Obelix, strongly resist Roman occupation.

The driving force behind the villagers' strength is their druid, Getafix, who possesses the secret formula for a magic potion that grants superhuman strength. This potion is brewed using a combination of various natural ingredients, including mistletoe. The Romans, keen on discovering the secret behind the potion, want to steal Getafix and force him to reveal the formula.

Enter the ambitious and somewhat bumbling Roman centurion, Crismus Bonus. He devises a plan to capture Getafix by pretending to offer him a lucrative position in Rome as the official druid of Caesar. The village chief, Vitalstatistix, unaware of Crismus Bonus' true intentions, agrees to let Getafix go to Rome.

However, Asterix and Obelix suspect foul play and secretly follow Getafix to Rome. In the grand city, they encounter various Roman characters, including the cunning prefect, Caius Bonus, who is Crismus Bonus' brother.

Captured by the Romans, Getafix is held in Caesar's palace while Asterix and Obelix devise a plan to rescue him. They navigate through the city, facing numerous challenges and comical situations along the way.

Meanwhile, back in the village, the villagers find the absence of their druid troubling, realizing the importance of the magic potion's power in their resistance against Roman oppression. They send a message to Asterix, informing him to hurry back with Getafix.

Asterix and Obelix ultimately succeed in freeing Getafix from Caesar's palace and escape back to their village. The Romans, disappointed in their failure, return empty-handed.

With Getafix back amongst his people, the Gauls brew the magic potion once again and, fueled by its supernatural abilities, they successfully repel the Roman forces.

The movie ends on a triumphant note with the villagers celebrating their victory over the Romans, solidifying their reputation as the indomitable Gauls who will always resist their conquerors.
