Walter Mitty works as a negative asset manager for Life magazine, a job that mainly involves processing photographs for publication. Due to the magazine's transition to an online format, many employees are facing potential layoffs, including Walter. To cope with his mundane reality, Walter's imagination takes him on incredible adventures where he is courageous, confident, and admired.

As Life magazine prepares to release its final print issue, legendary photographer Sean O'Connell sends Walter a roll of film for the magazine's cover, claiming it to be the "quintessence of life." However, Walter cannot find the negative corresponding to the iconic cover image. Determined to track down O'Connell and retrieve the missing negative, Walter embarks on a global journey filled with picturesque landscapes and unexpected challenges.

With the help of Cheryl, a coworker he has a secret crush upon, Walter travels to Greenland, Iceland, and Afghanistan, pursuing leads to find O'Connell. During his adventures, Walter encounters harsh climates, learns the art of longboarding, escapes an erupting volcano, leaps out of a helicopter, and even saves his newfound friend, a drunken pilot. Each experience pushes Walter out of his comfort zone and helps him develop self-assurance and a sense of purpose.

Meanwhile, Walter's mother, Edna, who is unaware of his daring escapades, becomes a significant concern for him. Edna dislikes change and discourages Walter from taking risks. Despite her disapproval, Walter's travels gradually repair their strained relationship.

As Walter continues his search, he learns more about Sean O'Connell's philosophy on photography and life. O'Connell believes that sometimes the most extraordinary moments are meant to be treasured privately, rather than captured on film. These insights challenge Walter's perception of adventure and the importance of living in the moment.

When Walter finally locates Sean O'Connell in the remote Himalayas, he discovers that the missing negative is not present. O'Connell explains that he purposely left it out because the perfect photograph should be experienced genuinely, rather than sensationalized. Understanding O'Connell's message, Walter realizes that his true adventure is embracing the unpredictability of life.

Back in New York, Life magazine prepares to close its doors permanently. Walter returns to work and confidently presents a stunning photo collage to potential buyers, demonstrating his newfound creativity and sense of self. The photo collection, featuring moments from his extraordinary journey, captures the essence of Life magazine's legacy.

In a heartwarming conclusion, Walter finds love with Cheryl and embraces a life filled with more genuine experiences. Walter Mitty's transformation from a daydreaming introvert to a courageous and inspired individual serves as a reminder to treasure the often overlooked moments that define our lives.
