In the movie "In the Cut," the self-determined woman living in New York City is named Frannie Avery, portrayed by Meg Ryan. Frannie is a reserved and intelligent English teacher who becomes intrigued by a series of graphic sexual and violent graffiti drawings in a restroom near her apartment.

Frannie's curiosity is piqued when she becomes involved in a dangerously passionate and mysterious affair with a detective named Giovanni Malloy, played by Mark Ruffalo. Despite the apparent danger, Frannie is unable to resist the allure of the charismatic and enigmatic Giovanni.
