In the movie Wind River, FBI agent Jane Banner is assigned to investigate the mysterious death of a young woman, Natalie Hanson, whose body is found in the remote mountains of the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. Due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the murder, Jane seeks the help of local game tracker Cory Lambert, who is well acquainted with the land and its inhabitants.

Cory reveals that he had a personal connection to the victim, as he was friends with Natalie's father, Martin, who is distraught following the tragic loss of his daughter. As Jane and Cory delve deeper into their investigation, they uncover a web of crime and corruption that plagues the reservation. It becomes evident that the harsh winter terrain and isolation have provided a cover for criminal activities.

The duo encounters resistance from the tribal police and the inhabitants of the reservation as they get closer to the truth. They face numerous obstacles, including the ruthless and powerful leader of a local gang named Pete Mickens. Amidst the dangers, Jane and Cory form a bond and find solace in each other, as both share their personal traumas with each other.

As they gather evidence and interview potential witnesses, they discover that Natalie's death was not an isolated incident. Several other young women have also gone missing or turned up dead under similar circumstances. They realize that a sex trafficking ring has been operating on the reservation, targeting vulnerable Native American girls.

Driven by their quest for justice, Jane and Cory work tirelessly to dismantle the criminal network, leading them to a dramatic shootout and confrontation with the culprits responsible for the trafficking ring. Along the way, they also confront the deep-seated social issues faced by the indigenous community, including poverty, addiction, and the ongoing mistreatment from the outside world.

In the end, although their investigation does not bring back the lives lost, Jane and Cory manage to expose the truth and bring some form of closure to the affected families. The film ends on a bittersweet note, emphasizing the ongoing struggles of the reservation and shedding light on the often overlooked injustices faced by indigenous communities in the United States.
