In Rebellion (L'Ordre et la Morale), the movie is based on true events that took place on Ouvéa Island in New Caledonia. The story unfolds in April 1988 when a group of Kanak separatists, known as freedom fighters, take 30 gendarmes (French police officers) hostage.

Amidst a tense political climate, the French government sends a force of 300 soldiers to the island to re-establish order and rescue the hostages. Leading the operation is Philippe Legorjus, a highly skilled and experienced officer who heads the elite counter-terrorist squad.

On the other side, Alphonse Dianou, a Kanak leader, takes charge of the kidnappers. As the head of the separatist group, Dianou is determined to gain recognition for his people's struggle and achieve independence from French rule.

Both Legorjus and Dianou, despite their contrasting positions, share a strong sense of honor, duty, and integrity. Recognizing this, Legorjus attempts to initiate a dialogue with Dianou in order to resolve the crisis peacefully. Through their discussions, they explore their shared values and experiences, and Legorjus begins to question the French government's approach to the situation.

However, behind the scenes, political agendas and electoral considerations come into play, causing the situation to escalate further. As the stakes become increasingly political, Legorjus finds himself caught in the middle, pushed to make choices that may compromise his morals and jeopardize the lives of the hostages.

Rebellion delves into the complexities of the power dynamics at play, both on the ground and within the halls of politics. The movie highlights the clash between morality and the pursuit of law and order, raising questions about the true cost of maintaining control and the sacrifices necessary in the face of political expediency.

Through its exploration of this violent and troubling story, Rebellion marks the return of Mathieu Kassovitz, who not only stars in the film but also directs it. Kassovitz is known for his acclaimed film La Haine (1995) and brings his signature style and social commentary to this gripping and thought-provoking drama.
