The movie Neds is set in Glasgow, Scotland, during the 1970s. John McGill, the protagonist, comes from a troubled family background where violence and criminal behavior are a regular occurrence. Despite John's high intelligence, he frequently endures bullying from both peers and teachers.

As John enters secondary school, he encounters a group of aggressive individuals known as NEDs, which stands for Non Educated Delinquents. Intrigued, he begins to associate with them and eventually becomes a part of their violent and criminal activities. John starts carrying a knife for protection and becomes a feared figure within the community.

However, as John's life spirals out of control, he yearns for change. He attempts to turn his life around by focusing on his studies, but the NEDs and his violent reputation make it difficult for him to escape his delinquent persona. Additionally, his abusive and alcoholic father constantly puts him down, making it challenging for John to break free from his circumstances.

While trying to distance himself from his criminal past, John finds solace in the companionship of a kind teacher, Mr. Mackay, who encourages his academic potential. Despite this, his reputation as a violent troublemaker continues to haunt him, leading to confrontations with both his peers and authorities.

As John struggles to reconcile his desire for a better future with the societal expectations and violence surrounding him, he eventually reaches a breaking point. The film delves into the consequences of his actions and the challenging journey he undergoes to regain control of his life, highlighting the complex interplay between violence, social expectations, and personal transformation.
