As Jangsaeng and Gong-gil settle in Seoul with their new group of street performers, they quickly gain popularity for their comedic and acrobatic acts. However, their luck takes a turn when they unintentionally mock the tyrannical King Yeonsan (played by Jung Jin-young) during a public performance.

The King's officials capture the group and bring them to the palace, where a death sentence awaits them. However, King Yeonsan, who finds solace in their entertaining performances, decides to spare their lives and keeps them as his personal court jesters.

Jangsaeng, being more politically aware, tries to use this opportunity to improve the lives of his fellow entertainers and advocate for their better treatment. On the other hand, Gong-gil catches the attention of the king with his beauty and unfathomable sadness hidden behind his performances.

As Gong-gil becomes the king's favorite, his relationship with Jangsaeng becomes strained. The other performers start resenting Gong-gil for receiving special treatment and believe he is forgetting their shared hardships. Jangsaeng, torn between his loyalty to Gong-gil and his sense of justice, finds himself in an increasingly precarious situation.

Meanwhile, King Yeonsan's erratic behavior and obsession with Gong-gil intensify. The king's sexuality comes into question as he develops a complex and possessive fascination with Gong-gil, causing turmoil within the palace.

In the midst of this chaos, Jangsaeng and the other members of the group try to protect Gong-gil and escape the clutches of the deranged king. They face numerous obstacles, including power-hungry ministers and palace intrigue, as they strive to find their freedom and happiness.

The King and the Clown is a compelling exploration of power, loyalty, and the sacrifices made for love and friendship in a volatile and oppressive society. As tensions rise and the king's grip on his own sanity loosens, the fate of Jangsaeng, Gong-gil, and their fellow performers hangs in the balance.
