In the movie Silenced, which is based on true events, the story revolves around the horrifying experiences of young deaf students at the Gwangju Inhwa School in South Korea. Set in the early 2000s, the film sheds light on the dark and disturbing history of repeated sexual assaults inflicted upon the hearing-impaired students by faculty members over a period of five years.

The plot follows new teacher Kang In-ho (played by Gong Yoo) as he arrives at the school and starts teaching a class of deaf students. Initially, he is met with challenging behavior from the students, who have become deeply traumatized due to their harrowing experiences.

As Kang tries to understand the reasons behind his students' behavior, he stumbles upon a deeply unsettling secret. He discovers that the school's administration, including several influential faculty members, has been systematically exploiting and sexually abusing the students for years. The revelations deeply shock Kang and he decides to fight for justice and ensure the perpetrators are held accountable.

Kang joins forces with a human rights activist and a public defender to initiate legal proceedings against the abusers. However, they face significant obstacles, as the authorities, led by a powerful and corrupt school board, attempt to cover up the crimes. Despite the opposition, Kang and his allies persist in their quest for justice, determined to expose the truth and protect the innocent students from further harm.

As the legal battle unfolds, the movie explores the personal struggles, emotional trauma, and resilience of the victims and the people fighting on their behalf. Along the way, it highlights the societal prejudices faced by the deaf community, as well as the larger theme of systemic abuse of power and the lengths individuals will go to protect their own interests.

With gripping intensity, Silenced portrays the horrifying ordeal that these young deaf students endured and emphasizes the urgent need for a more just and inclusive society. It is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged film that sheds light on a dark chapter in Korean history while also advocating for the rights and welfare of marginalized individuals.
