In the film Laugh or Die (originally titled "Tuntematon sotilas"), set during the Finnish Civil War, Parikka and his troupe find themselves imprisoned and facing execution for alleged war crimes. Believing in the innocence of the accused actors, Jaeger Lieutenant Nyborg, a fan of Parikka's comedic talents, hatches a plan to save them.

With the impending visit of German General von der Goltz to the prison island, Nyborg sees an opportunity. He proposes that the actors prepare a comical performance for the high-ranking visitor, hoping to convince him to intervene and grant them a new trial. However, this task proves to be immensely challenging given the dire conditions they face – starvation, death, and the scarcity of surviving actors.

Parikka, recognized as the Funniest Man in Finland, takes up the daunting challenge. Using his inventive skills and resourcefulness, he collaborates with the remaining actors, as well as the stagehands, to create a comedy that will entertain and captivate General von der Goltz. Their lives hang in the balance as they strive to find humor amidst the brutality and desperation of their captivity.

The film explores the power of laughter as an act of resistance in the face of adversity. It delves into the struggle of the characters to maintain their humanity and preserve their artistic expression in a world consumed by violence and oppression.

Throughout Laugh or Die, the audience witnesses the unfolding of this remarkable and heartwarming story, showcasing the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of comedy even in the most unimaginable circumstances.
