In "A Happy Divorce," the story revolves around the unlikely friendship between a young man who recently survived a suicide attempt and his doctor, who claims to have the ability to restore his joy in life. However, both men are struggling with their own personal issues and lead unfulfilled lives.

The young man, named Jake, is grappling with deep sadness and a sense of emptiness, which led him to contemplate suicide. After his rescue, he finds himself in the care of Dr. Michael Adams, a renowned psychiatrist known for his unconventional methods. Dr. Adams believes that he can bring happiness back into Jake's life and decides to make a bet on his ability to do so.

As they embark on this journey together, it becomes apparent that Dr. Adams' seemingly happy life is an illusion. Despite presenting himself as being content with his "happy divorce," he secretly longs for his ex-wife, Sarah, and wishes to win her back. This creates a tangled web of lies and complications that affect both the doctor's personal life and his ability to help Jake.

Through therapy sessions, outings, and various humorous and poignant encounters, Dr. Adams tries to impart his wisdom and happiness-seeking techniques to Jake. However, his own unhappiness and unresolved personal issues begin to seep into their interactions, leading to a blend of dark humor and emotional turmoil.

Meanwhile, complications arise as Jake becomes intertwined with Sarah and her new husband, who are clueless about Dr. Adams' true intentions. As the doctor's lies and distortions unravel, the relationships between all involved parties become strained, and the true weight of their respective unhappiness is exposed.

The film delves into themes of self-discovery, the search for happiness, the nature of personal relationships, and the importance of confronting and resolving one's own emotional baggage. Ultimately, both Jake and Dr. Adams must confront their own demons and find a way to regain their lost joy, facing the consequences of their actions and attempting to find genuine happiness in their lives.
