In the film "City Streets," Gary Cooper plays a character named The Kid, a racketeer who is deeply in love with Nan, the daughter of his boss, Pop Cooley, a mob henchman. The Kid's love for Nan is the driving force behind his involvement in a life of crime.

As the story progresses, The Kid gets caught up in a web of deceit and betrayal within the criminal underworld. Manipulated by his fellow mob members, he finds himself wrongfully accused and convicted of a crime he did not commit. Nan, deeply concerned for his safety and wanting him to leave behind his life of crime, pleads with The Kid to give it up, but he stubbornly refuses.

While The Kid serves his prison sentence, Nan's desperation to free him leads her to make a deal with corrupt individuals. She agrees to do their bidding in exchange for The Kid's release. However, despite her efforts, Nan soon realizes that she has been drawn into a dangerous scheme.

As tensions escalate and the mob's control over their lives tightens, The Kid and Nan find themselves on a dangerous and uncertain path. The couple becomes entangled in a series of treacherous situations, ultimately leading to a final confrontation with the criminal forces that have manipulated and controlled them.

In a tragic turn of events, The Kid and Nan are taken "for a ride," a term often used to describe being killed or taken away to meet a grim fate. This bleak ending serves as a chilling reminder of the consequences that can come from a life of crime and the destructive power of love in a world filled with corruption and deceit.
