Petrov's Flu tells the story of Petrov, a comic book artist living with his family in post-Soviet Russia. The film begins with Petrov falling ill with a severe case of the flu. As he becomes bedridden, his friend Igor comes to visit him. Concerned about Petrov's condition, Igor decides to help him by taking him on a long walk through the city.

As Igor carries Petrov on his back, Petrov's mind drifts between both fantasy and reality. Throughout the journey, Petrov vividly imagines and hallucinates various moments from his past and present. These surreal episodes reflect his feverish state and offer insight into his emotions, memories, and imagination.

Amidst his delusions, Petrov reflects on his relationship with his wife and his daughter. He contemplates the Soviet era's impact on his family's lives, recalling both the joys and hardships they have endured. Petrov's fantasy world blends elements of his childhood, Soviet propaganda, and his experiences as a comic book artist and storyteller.

Despite his weaken state, Petrov engages in philosophical conversations with Igor, who acts as a sounding board for his thoughts and delirium. As they continue their walk, the boundaries between fantasy and reality become increasingly blurred.

The film explores themes of family, love, creativity, and the individual's struggle to reconcile their personal experiences with the larger sociopolitical context of post-Soviet Russia. Through Petrov's hallucinations and memories, the audience gains insight into the complex nature of the human mind and the profound impact of historical events on individuals and society.

As Petrov and Igor reach their destination, Petrov's fever breaks, and he slowly returns to reality. The film concludes with Petrov reflecting on his experiences during his illness, and he begins to create a comic book based on his feverish hallucinations. This act of artistic expression becomes a cathartic and transformative experience, allowing Petrov to make sense of his past, the present, and the uncertain future of his country.
