In The Age of Shadows, the story primarily revolves around Lee Jeong-chool, a Korean-born Japanese police officer who works as a double agent for the resistance fighters. Lee is deeply conflicted about his loyalty and identity, torn between his Korean heritage and his duty to the Japanese authorities.

The movie begins with Lee successfully infiltrating the Korean resistance group, led by Kim Woo-jin, who plans to transport explosives from Shanghai to Seoul to carry out a series of bombings against Japanese facilities. Lee's superior, Chief of Police Hashimoto, assigns him the task of discovering the identity of the resistance leader.

As Lee gains the trust of the resistance members, including Kim's second-in-command, Jung Chae-san, he starts to sympathize with their cause and questions his allegiance to the Japanese. Meanwhile, the Japanese authorities become suspicious of a mole within their ranks and increase their efforts to uncover the resistance's plans.

The cat-and-mouse game intensifies as Lee's loyalties are tested when the resistance recruits a skilled and ruthless sniper, Yeon Gye-soon. Lee becomes romantically involved with her, further complicating his mission. Meanwhile, the head of the Japanese military police, Higashi, becomes obsessed with capturing the resistance fighters and eliminating Lee's dual role.

Throughout the film, there are several captivating action sequences, featuring chases, shootouts, and tense interrogations. The cinematography vividly portrays the chaos and uncertainty of this turbulent period, capturing the essence of 1920s East Asia.

As the resistance's plan to transport the explosives to Seoul progresses, tensions rise among the group, and suspicion falls on Lee. With danger closing in from both the Japanese authorities and his own allies, Lee must make difficult choices that will determine the fates of those involved.

In the dramatic climax, the resistance fighters carry out their bombings, resulting in a chaotic and destructive showdown.
