In the film Dolls, the story revolves around three different couples whose lives intertwine in various ways.

The first couple is Matsumoto and Sawako, as mentioned before. After Matsumoto's parents insist on his arranged marriage, he agrees and leaves Sawako, causing her to become mentally unstable and admitted to a psychiatric hospital. However, Matsumoto realizes his mistake and goes back for her, leaving his new bride on their wedding day. Determined to take care of Sawako, he ties a red rope around her wrist, symbolizing their unbreakable bond. They embark on a journey together, traveling through different locations in Japan.

The second couple is Hiro, a yakuza (Japanese gangster) member, and his former love interest, Haruna, a pop star. Their past relationship fell apart when Hiro became more involved in the criminal world. However, Haruna still has feelings for him and attends every one of his gang's performances. After one of Hiro's violent confrontations, Haruna is severely injured and becomes blind and unable to pursue her career. Despite the hardships, Hiro stays devoted to her, and they begin a new chapter together.

The third couple is Matsumoto's boss, a wealthy businessman, and his wife. Their relationship has lost its spark, and the husband spends most of his time working and neglecting his wife's emotional needs. Feeling lonely, his wife embarks on a journey to reconnect with her past by visiting the locations she once enjoyed with her ex-lover. Along the way, she crosses paths with Matsumoto and Sawako and learns valuable lessons about love, sacrifice, and the importance of cherishing the present.

Throughout the film, the story of each couple is depicted through the art of Bunraku doll theater. These traditional puppets embody the emotions and experiences of the characters, adding an ethereal and symbolic dimension to the narrative. As the film progresses, the characters confront the fleeting nature of fame, power, and wealth, ultimately realizing that true happiness lies in love and human connection.

Dolls is a visually stunning film that explores themes of love, devotion, sacrifice, and the impact of our choices on our relationships. It presents a poignant and sometimes melancholic portrayal of human relationships and the pursuit of happiness.
