Outside Satan (Hors Satan) is a 2011 French drama film directed by Bruno Dumont. The film follows a mysterious wanderer, known only as "The Guy," who wanders along the Côte d'Opale, a coastal region in northern France.

"The Guy" lives a solitary life, residing near a small hamlet characterized by dunes and marshes. He is a deeply enigmatic figure, seemingly disconnected from society and having no apparent attachments or origins. Despite this, he engages in various activities to sustain himself and survive.

A significant aspect of "The Guy's" existence involves poaching, where he hunts animals in order to obtain food. This illegal activity showcases his resourcefulness in an environment that is both harsh and isolated. Alongside his poaching, he also engages in spiritual practices, spending time in prayer and introspection.

"The Guy" forms a peculiar relationship with a young woman, referred to as "The Girl," who lives in the hamlet near his dwelling. While their bond is ambiguous and remains largely unexplored, their connection is vital to the narrative. They interact sporadically, sharing moments of intimacy and contemplation, but their exact relationship and motivations are left deliberately open-ended.

Throughout the film, "The Guy" becomes entangled in various incidents that blur the line between good and evil. He is frequently confronted with instances of violence, often resorting to brutality to protect himself or others. These actions serve to emphasize his primitive existence and highlight the ambiguous morality of his choices.

As the story progresses, "The Guy" becomes increasingly enigmatic and mythical, almost operating as a mythological figure within the rural community. The film predominantly focuses on the exploration of human nature, the influence of spirituality, and the interplay between good and evil.

Outside Satan is a contemplative and often abstract film that intentionally leaves many elements of plot and character ambiguous. It delves into themes of isolation, morality, and the inherent complexities of the human condition, offering a haunting and unconventional cinematic experience.
