In the movie Timbuktu, the story revolves around the lives of a cattle herder named Kidane, his wife Satima, and their daughter Toya, who live peacefully in the dunes near the ancient city of Timbuktu. Set in 2012, the region is under the control of jihadist groups associated with Al-Qaeda.

The herder and his family lead a simple and harmonious life, surrounded by the beautiful landscape and the company of their animals. They adhere to the tranquil version of Islam practiced by the majority of the region's inhabitants.

However, their peaceful existence is abruptly disrupted when a Jihadist group begins to impose strict Sharia law in the area. The militants forbid music, games, and smoking, and even force women to wear gloves, socks, and traditional veils that cover their entire bodies.

One day, Kidane's cattle wander into a neighboring fisherman's nets, resulting in the death of one of his beloved cows. A dispute arises between Kidane and the fisherman, which escalates into a tragic confrontation. This incident catches the attention of the Jihadists, and Kidane becomes a target of their brutal justice system.

As the occupation continues, the jihadists impose their will on the local population, seeking to control their every aspect of life. The community is subjected to public punishments, floggings, amputations, and even stoning for those who dare to resist or defy their strict rules.

Amid this turmoil, Kidane's fate hangs in the balance, and the family's struggle to survive becomes increasingly desperate. As they navigate the chaos and brutality of the occupation, they find solace in their strong bond and their unwavering faith.

Timbuktu portrays the daily lives of the people in this war-torn region and sheds light on the resilience and strength of those who are caught in the crossfire between militants and the peaceful traditions of their land. The movie offers a powerful exploration of the destructive impact of extremist ideologies and the potential destruction of a rich cultural heritage.
